Professional Affiliations:

We strongly urge all of our ABC students to join the Association of Pet Dog Trainers,
www.apdt.com.  APDT has been instrumental in promoting dog-friendly training and professional education for dog trainers since it was founded in 1993 by Dr. Ian Dunbar.  Membership in APDT provides many benefits, including educational conferences, an excellent Yahoo email group, professional discounts with insurers and supply companies, job-listings, and an online trainer's
directory.

Position Statements from American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior

AVSAB has issued important position statements on punishment, guidelines for the use of punishment, types of behavior professionals, and puppy socialization.
Click Here to go to the AVSAB Position Statement page.  All trainers should be aware of these statements!

Recommended Reading

Recommended reading for class is available through
www.dogwise.com, an internet dog book store and supply company.  New trainers or trainers seeking certification through the Certification Council for Professional Trainers (CPDT) may be most interested in titles available through the APDT/CPDT link in the left menu of the Dogwise site.  Dogwise offers many books unavailable through traditional bookstores.  Dogwise also offers a 10% discount to APDT members.

Presentations for Observation Phase

The following presentations are required during the Observation phase of ABC externships: Housetraining, Digging, Jumping/Polite Greetings, Chewing, Puppy Mouthing/Nipping, Barking, Pre-Class Safety Check & Class Safety Guidelines.

Present each topic as if addressing a group of students in your basic class. You may utilize notes or an outline held on a clipboard to help with your presentation. Providing a handout on your topic is a very good way to ensure that your topic is well-understood by your students. Preparing handouts on your weekly topic in preparation for this class will give you a great head start in preparation for classes you will soon be teaching.
