Why Choose a CPDT?

Choosing the right trainer for you and your dog can seem like a daunting task!  The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers was formed in 2001 to help you find the right trainer.  Prior to the council's formation, the profession of dog training had no national standard.  Very experienced, knowledgeable instructors were training dogs side by side with "trainers' who may have taken one class and read a book.  How were pet owners to know who should help them train their dogs?

The CCPDT formed a team of the dog training industry's most talented trainers.  Together they worked with an independent testing agency to formulate a national exam.  This comprehensive test is comprised of questions concerning ethology, husbandry, training equipment, instruction skills, and learning theory.  To qualify to sit for the exam, applicants must have at least 300 hours in the dog training field, with 225 as a full charge instructor.  Applicants also must provide references from a client, a veterinarian, as well as a fellow instructor.  The test is administered 3 times a year at approved test sites by the Professional Testing Corporation.  Trainers who pass the exam earn the title Certified Professional Dog Trainer and may use the initials CPDT.

When you choose a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, you can be confident that you are working with a professional who has the knowledge and expertise to make your investment in dog training safe, effective, and even fun!  Certified Professional Dog Trainers have earned this credential by demonstrating their knowledge and experience in dog training. CPDT's maintain their credential by attending workshops and seminars.  Because of this continuing education, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer stays informed of current knowledge in the field and is familiar with the latest, most effective training techniques and equipment.

Choosing a trainer with the CPDT credential can be an important step in ensuring a rewarding and successful experience for you and your canine companion.
